Hello Ruth,

Please know that I am very supportive of you, and that I am outraged that CTS would engage in this sort of behavior. I am ashamed that they bear the name of Christ.

This is a question that I cannot answer from the personal information that you have posted on your website.

As far as ungodliness goes, were you divorced and then decided to remarry? Did anything happen during your dating and engagement that would be viewed by puritan CRC standards as improper?

Hello Karen,

Thank you so much for your support.

You asked an important question that may be on the minds of others:

"As far as ungodliness goes, were you divorced and then decided to remarry? Did anything happen during your dating and engagement that would be viewed by puritan CRC standards as improper?"

Answering that in detail would take a lot of space. I was 19 years in a physically abusive marriage. My son and I escaped in 1987 with the support of the Reformed church where we were members. My son has not known of his father's whereabouts since 1988. My ex-husband divorced me; I did not divorce him.

Yes, I have remarried--in 2004. Did anything happen in our engagement that was "improper" or, to use Neal Plantinga's term, "ungodly"? I'm sure you don't want a blow-by-blow account of our dating. I use that phraseology because Neal specified my "ungodliness" as a detailed "tirade." No, there were no tirades nor sexual indiscressions.

But, the most important point is that such has never been charged. When the charges of ungodliness were made, they were unspecified. I barely knew John who was then married to my friend Myra Kraker, who died in 2003.

SUMMARY

  • I began teaching at Calvin Theological Seminary in 2000--the first full-time woman professor in the school's 125-year history. In 2003, less than 3 months after Cornelius Plantinga, Jr. was installed as the new president, I was, without warning, removed from tenure track and given a terminal appointment. I have repeatedly asked that all the evidence be opened only to be blocked by a dishonest cover-up. When independent mediators were retained by the seminary board in 2005, they called for "retroactive pay to 2003," among other things. That report was buried. I finished my second terminal appointment on August 31, 2006, and shortly thereafter published this blog
